TOPIC

From my Macintosh in Singapore, I want to connect to a VAX system in
Europe. I'd like to use the X.25 network system (Telepac). My only
application sends and receives electronic mail.

Is there an MS-mail to VMSmail gateway system available? I know that there
is an All-in-1 emulation product for the Macintosh to VAX, but I don't have
an All-in-1 on my VAX system, only standard VMSmail.

I want to keep cost low and would only want to send and receive mails, not
log on to the VAX and create mails across the X.25 line.

DISCUSSION

We found two products, both from Alisa Systems.

    AlisaMail
    ---------
    VAX-based electronic mail system
    Macintosh Plus or larger.

AlisaMail is a VAX-based electronic store-and-forward message switch that
integrates Macintosh and VAX mail systems. It's an expanding series of
mail servers and an SQL-based engine, called the Information Switch, that
when used together provides transparent message exchange between users of
Microsoft Mail, VMSmail, All-In-1, X.400 and more. AlisaMail consists of a
VAX-based server for Microsoft Mail (100 percent Microsoft Mail
compatible), a VMSmail server and the Information Switch. Servers for
Automatic Document Conversion and for Digital's Message Router will be
available. The Information Switch provides message and directory services
for the AlisaMail servers and comprehensive administration facilities,
including accounting and reporting for tracking delivery delays and message

traffic loads and other similar functions. Available with 10-user license
    or unlimited user license.

    MailMate
    --------
    Macintosh to VAX mail bridge
    Macintosh Plus or larger.

The MailMate family of products provide gateways to DECnet mail users for
existing Macintosh-based electronic mail packages. Currently, MailMate
gateways are available for CE Software's QuickMail and Microsoft Corp.'s
Microsoft Mail. The MailMate gateways provide two-way exchange of text
messages with Digital Equipment Corp.'s DECnet mail (also known as
VMSmail), making mail exchange possible between QuickMail or Microsoft Mail
and Digital's All-In-1 system, IBM PROFS, X.400 and other services
supported by MailBus, when used in conjunction with Digital's Message
Router/MailBus services and the MRGATE gateway. MailMate products support
use of automatic address prefix and suffix for groups of users, restricting
access to gateway services, logging of all gateway activity for the mail
manager, use of pre-defined forms and templates for users and one-

off addressing. MailMate licenses are available for one to 10 users, one to
30 users, one to 100 users and unlimited users. MailMate uses Alisa's
DECnet package for the Macintosh, making the Macintosh a true DECnet node
capable of receiving and sending DECnet mail. DECnet access may be via
Ethernet, LocalTalk (and the Kinetics FastPath IV) or asynchronous (DDCMP)
    connection.
