TOPIC

    Do Apple Ethernet cards conform to the GOSIP (US Government Open Systems
    Interconnection Profile) standard developed by the Government before the
    Open System Standard was announced.

DISCUSSION

    According to the GOSIP standard (FIPS PUB 146), GOSIP does not mandate any
    specific physical interface standard for the Physical Layer. As far as the
    Link Layer is concerned, Apple Ethernet cards should conform to GOSIP,
    since GOSIP requires that the data link layer protocols be selected by the
    Acquisition Authority, including from the High Level Data Link Control
    (HDLC), Link Access Procedure B (LAP B), in conjunction with X.25 [NBS 1,3;
    ISO 26], and ISO 8802/2 in conjunction with ISO 8802/3, ISO 8802/4, or ISO
    8802/5 [NBS 1; ISO 28-31].

    There are many requirements in GOSIP regarding the upper layer, which
    software is not all available for the Macintosh platform. For example, the
    Application Layer covers Association Control Service Elements (ACSE) which
    support all applications, File Transfer, Access, and Management Protocol
    (FTAM), and Message Handling System.
