TOPIC

File Sharing in Mac OS X Public Beta only shares a user's Public folder.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

Even though the Inspector indicates that other folders or volumes have read-write privileges for Everyone, only a user's Public folder is shared. Volumes that are not startup disks are not shared at all.

    • Mac OS X Public Beta

    Solution

By design, Mac OS X Public Beta only shares a user's Public folder. Limited File Sharing is a feature of Mac OS X Public Beta.

If the items you wish to share take up too much hard disk space to duplicate them in your Public folder, you may log in to Mac OS X Public Beta File Sharing as the System Administrator user and access all the computer's volumes. The System Administrator user logs in like any other File Sharing user, from either the Chooser or the Connect to Server dialog of the client computer. In place of the normal user name, enter "System Administrator." Use the administrative user's password. The administrative user is either the person who first set up the Mac OS X Public Beta computer, or any other user designated "Admin" in the Multiple Users application on the computer sharing the files.

Warning: A user logged in as System Administrator has complete read-write access to all files on all volumes connected to a computer running Mac OS X Public Beta. System Administrator access should never be used in an environment in which security or user skill level concerns could result in the unauthorized introduction or deletion of data. For users familiar with UNIX, the System Administrator user is equivalent to a root user.

Alternatively, you may access files via an FTP client application when that option is enabled in the Sharing pane of the System Preferences application. FTP does not restrict access to just the Public folders.
