TOPIC

You may receive errors when trying to copy or create files on a Mac OS Standard (HFS) format volume.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

When copying files or folders to a Mac OS Standard (HFS) volume, an alert box appears with this error message:

"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient write privileges."

    Related symptoms include:
    • Files that appear to be successfully copied to an HFS volume may not open.
    • A generic, blank document appears when attempting to create an alias on an HFS volume.

    Products affected
    • Mac OS X Public Beta

    Solution

This issue cannot affect the startup volume, because Mac OS X Public Beta cannot be installed on an HFS volume. If the HFS volume is on removable media, such as a Zip disk, the easiest solution is to back up the volume and reformat it using Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus) format. If a large volume, such as a hard disk partition, cannot be backed up conveniently and reformatted, start up the computer using Mac OS 9 to perform the desired operation.

Warning: Reformatting erases all data on a volume.
