Follow these steps to reinstall Mac OS 9 after having installed Mac OS X Public Beta.

DISCUSSION

    Where to reinstall

Reinstallation of Mac OS 9 on a hard disk or disk partition on which Mac OS X Public Beta is currently installed requires you to initialize that hard disk or erase that partition.

Warning: Erasing a disk partition or initializing a disk destroys all data on that disk or partition. You should make a backup copy of any data you wish to preserve before continuing.

    Hard disk: partitioned or not?

A partitioned hard disk appears and behaves as two or more disks on the desktop. Though you may install both Mac OS X Public Beta and Mac OS 9 on an unpartitioned disk, having partitions may significantly simplify the reinstallation process. For instructions on partitioning, see:

Article 19286: " Drive Setup 1.0.x: How to Partition Your Hard Disk. "

Whether or not your hard disk is partitioned prior to reinstalling Mac OS 9 determines which set of steps you follow.

    Reinstalling on an unpartitioned disk
      1. Choose a Mac OS 9 CD. You may use a retail version of the Mac OS 9 CD or either the Software Restore or Software Install disc that came with your computer. If you plan to use the new software installation with the Classic environment in Mac OS X Public Beta, be sure that the Software Restore or Software Install CD is labeled as system software version 9.0 or later.

      2. Insert the Mac OS CD.

      3. Choose Shut Down from the Special menu.

      4. Press the power button.

      5. Press and hold down the "c" key as the computer starts up.

      6. Open Drive Setup. It is located in the Utilities folder on the Mac OS 9 CD.
Note: If the hard disk does not appear in the list of drives, locate the disk on the desktop and click once to select it. Choose Erase Disk from the Special menu. Be sure that the Format pop-up menu is set to Mac OS Extended (HFS Plus).

      7. Initialize the disk, selecting a partitioning scheme if desired.

      8. After initialization is complete, choose Quit from the File menu.

      9. Open the installer on the Mac OS 9 CD and follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: If Mac OS 9 came with your computer, you have the option of using the Software Restore CD to restore the contents of your hard disk to the factory configuration. The Restore program allows you to choose to reformat the drive prior to installation. Instructions for using the Restore CD are included with your computer.
