TOPIC You may use Disk Copy images and self-mounting images in Mac OS X Public Beta by following the steps described here. DISCUSSION Disk image files There are two common types of disk image files produced by Apple software. These instructions may not apply to disk images created by third-party software. Disk Copy images Files of this type normally carry the suffix ".img" as a part of their file names. Their icon looks like a picture of a blue floppy disk printed on a piece of white paper with one corner folded down. You must have the Disk Copy application for this type of image to "mount," which means to appear on your desktop or in the Finder as an available disk. Self-mounting images Files of this type normally carry the suffix ".smi" as a part of their file name. As the name implies, this type of file may be mounted without the use of Disk Copy. The icon for a self-mounting image file looks like a blue floppy disk on top of a white diamond. How to locate Disk Copy Versions of Disk Copy released prior to Mac OS X Public Beta only make disk images available in the Classic environment. Therefore, you should use the version of Disk Copy included with Mac OS X Public Beta.
2. If the tool bar does not appear in the Finder window, choose Show Toolbar from the View menu. 3. Click Applications. 4. Double-click Utilities. How to use a Disk Copy image The correct version of Disk Copy opens automatically if you double-click on the disk image from the Mac OS X Public Beta Finder. For example:
2. If the tool bar does not appear in the Finder window, choose Show Toolbar from the View menu. 3. Click Computer. 4. Using the Finder window, navigate to the disk image you want to use. 5. Double-click the disk image. Disk Copy opens and makes the image available in the Finder window's Computers directory and on the desktop (though the latter may be disabled in Dock & Desktop Preferences). How to use a self-mounting image If you simply double-click on a self-mounting image, as you would for versions of Mac OS prior to Mac OS X Public Beta, the image will only be available in the Classic environment. Therefore, you should use the version of Disk Copy included with Mac OS X Public Beta to mount the image. Follow these steps:
2. Drag the self-mounting image icon onto the Disk Copy window. Disk Copy makes the image available in the Finder window's Computers directory and on the desktop (though the latter may be disabled in Dock & Desktop Preferences). Quitting Disk Copy After you have mounted a disk image of either type, you may quit Disk Copy. The image remains available until you put it away or restart your computer. |
