TOPIC

The America Online application cannot establish a dialup connection from the Classic environment of Mac OS X Public Beta.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

When you try to connect to America Online, this message appears:
"Unable to communicate with the modem."

    Products affected
    • Mac OS X Public Beta
    • America Online 5.0 and earlier

    Solution

This happens because the American Online application needs direct access to the computer's serial port or internal modem to make a dialup connection. In its current version, Mac OS X Public Beta does not allow the Classic environment this type of hardware access.

    There are two possible workarounds:
    • If you have access to an alternate Internet connection, such as a cable or DSL modem or LAN, then you may connect to America Online services after making an initial TCP/IP connection.
    • Start up your computer from Mac OS 9 to use America Online.

Apple and America Online are working to bring normal America Online functionality to a future version of Mac OS X.
