DISCUSSION

    Symptoms
    • The computer will not to start up from a Mac OS 9 volume.
    • If you open Drive Setup in the Classic environment, you do not see any available disks.

    Products affected
    • Mac OS X Public Beta

    Solution

The Classic environment of Mac OS X Public Beta does not allow Drive Setup to update drivers located on the hard drive that are used when starting up the computer from Mac OS 9. This does not affect the computer when it is started up from Mac OS X Public Beta.

Start up the computer from Mac OS 9 when you need to:
    • use Drive Setup to update disk drivers
    • install a software update that updates hard drive drivers, including Mac OS 9.0.4.

If, for example, you update from Mac OS 9.0 to Mac OS 9.0.4 in the Classic environment with the computer started up from Mac OS X Public Beta, you may later encounter an issue starting up the computer from Mac OS 9.0.4 due to the fact that the hard drive's drivers were not updated. To ensure that the hard drive's drivers are updated, start up the computer from Mac OS 9 to install Mac OS 9 software updates.
