TOPIC
Because Classic takes its network settings from the Mac OS X operating system, changes made in the Mac OS 9 TCP/IP control panel while in the Classic environment are ignored.
DISCUSSION
Symptom In some cases, the settings in the Mac OS 9 TCP/IP control panel appear editable in the Classic environment. However, any changes made are ignored. At other times, the settings in the Mac OS 9 TCP/IP control panel may appear read-only, which is the correct behavior for the Classic environment. Product affected Mac OS X Public Beta Solution When the computer is started up from Mac OS X Public Beta, use the Network pane of the System Preferences application to make TCP/IP changes. You may continue to use the TCP/IP control panel when the computer is started up from Mac OS 9. Additional information The Classic application gets its network settings from the Mac OS X Public Beta operating system, but this action does not modify the Mac OS 9 TCP/IP Preferences. If you restart the computer from Mac OS 9, the TCP/IP settings will be the same as they were the last time the computer was started up from Mac OS 9, assuming that the TCP/IP Preferences file has not been removed from the System Folder. The TCP/IP control panel when viewed in Classic may display different settings than the TCP/IP control panel when started up up from Mac OS 9. Practically, this means that you can use different settings when started up from the two different operating systems and that they will be preserved. These steps illustrate a common scenario in which the symptom may occur: TCP/IP networking in Classic is based on the Mac OS X System Preferences settings. Normally this means the settings in Classic should be read-only and contain the values that Classic obtains from the Mac OS X System Preferences. You may correct the cosmetic issue of blank TCP/IP values by following these steps: The next time you open the Classic TCP/IP control panel, the fields should be set to the Mac OS X System Preferences values and presented as read-only. |
