TOPIC

Applications open in the Classic environment of Mac OS X Public Beta do not have direct access to networking hardware.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

Applications such as network "sniffers" used to capture raw network traffic do not work in Classic. Such an application may report that it cannot find any ports.

    Product affected

    Mac OS X Public Beta

    Solution

Use a Mac OS X-native application for functions, such as packet capture, that require direct networking hardware access. Alternatively, you may start up the computer from Mac OS 9 to use such an application.

Open Transport, AppleTalk, and TCP/IP networking within Classic rely on the networking capability provided by Mac OS X. LocalTalk (AppleTalk over serial ports) does not work in Classic, nor does any software which depends on accessing the network directly through networking hardware.
