TOPIC Personal File Sharing works in the Classic environment of Mac OS X Public Beta, though it does not share over TCP/IP. DISCUSSION Though a computer started up from Mac OS 9 would be able to share over both AppleTalk and TCP/IP, Personal File Sharing in the Classic environment works only over the AppleTalk protocol. This is a normal limitation of Classic. Conversely, the Mac OS X Sharing service in Mac OS X Public Beta works over TCP/IP but not AppleTalk. Client computers started up from Mac OS 9.0.4 or earlier with AppleTalk active can connect to a Personal File Sharing volume being shared by the Classic environment, but another Mac OS X Public Beta computer would not be able to make an AppleTalk connection. Practically, this means that two Mac OS X Public Beta computers configured for Personal File Sharing in the Classic environment cannot connect to each other. However, two Mac OS X Public Beta computers set up to share files in the Sharing pane of the System Preferences application could connect successfully with some limitations.
