TOPIC

On some Macintosh computers, using the space bar to access the Extensions Manager at system startup time may cause the computer to stop responding (also known as a "freeze").

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

After using the space bar to access the Extensions Manager during system startup time, the computer may stop responding immediately after the Extensions Manager window is closed.

    Products affected
    • Mac OS 9.1

    Solution

This occurs when the Iomega driver is loaded. To prevent this error, you may force the Iomega Driver extension to load first. If you do not have an Iomega device, you may simply remove or disable the Iomega extension.

To force the Iomega extension to load first:
      1. Double-click the hard drive icon on your desktop.
      2. Double-click the System Folder.
      3. Double-click the Extensions folder.
      4. Click the item named Iomega Driver.
      5. Choose Get Info from the File menu.
      6. At the top of the Info window is the name field for the item. Type a single space in front of the word "Iomega."
      7. Close the Info window.

Placing a blank space in front of the extension's name causes the Mac OS to load that extension first.
