TOPIC

Turning on the Multiple Users control panel on an AppleShare IP server prevents remote administration with Mac OS Server Admin by forcing the Mac OS Server Admin Agent to quit when the administrator logs out. You should use alternate methods of securing an AppleShare IP server.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

When you attempt to connect to the server using Mac OS Server Admin from a remote computer, an alert box with this message appears:
"There is no server available at that address. You should check to make sure that there is a Mac OS Server Admin Agent on the requested port at that address."

    Products affected
    • AppleShare IP 6.3.x
    • Mac OS 9.x

    Solution

Mac OS Server Admin Agent is an application that accepts connections from the Mac OS Server Admin application. The alert box (Figure 1) appears any time that the Mac OS Server Admin Agent is not an open application at the server. You can verify this by checking the Application Menu on the AppleShare IP server.

The Multiple Users feature of Mac OS 9.x, if activated on the server, forces the Mac OS Server Admin Agent to quit when the Multiple Users administrator chooses the Logout command from the Special menu.

Web-based administration is still possible without the Mac OS Server Admin Agent, but you should not use the Multiple Users control panel as the preferred method of securing an AppleShare IP server. The Multiple Users control panel is designed for use with Macintosh computers used as workstations.

As suggested in the Getting Started With AppleShare IP 6.3 manual, in the section named "Protecting Your Server," you should use other techniques for securing a server:
      1. Place the computer in a room with controlled access.
      2. Use a screen saver with password protection.
      3. Run the server without a display attached, and administer the server remotely. Some servers require a video terminator if operated without a monitor. For a list of computers that require a video terminator to operate without a monitor, please see:

Article 21236: " Power Macintosh: Using Without a Monitor Attached "

You may select Mac OS Server Admin Agent from Recent Applications to reopen it.
