TOPIC

A PowerBook using a third-party PC card to connect to an AirPort network cannot do so when started up from Mac OS X.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

A PowerBook cannot connect to an AirPort network when started up from Mac OS X.

    Products affected
    • Mac OS X 10.0
    • Third-party IEEE 802.11-compliant PC cards

    Solution

Mac OS X 10.0 AirPort client software does not include drivers for Lucent WaveLAN, Agere Orinoco, or other third-party IEEE 802.11-compliant PC cards that work with Mac OS 9.x AirPort client software.

As a workaround, you may use the Startup Disk pane in System Preferences to restart your computer from Mac OS 9.1 when you need to connect to an AirPort network. This is most useful if you also have an Ethernet connection available at a fixed location (for using Mac OS X) and use AirPort for attending meetings or other activities.

Note : Wireless internet access requires AirPort Card, AirPort Base Station, and Internet Access (fees may apply). Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort, including America Online. Range may vary with site conditions.
