TOPIC

You should not make unauthorized changes to Open Firmware to enable password protection.

DISCUSSION

The Apple Firmware updates named explicitly below provide the groundwork for password protecting computers at a low level. However, this feature is disabled by default. With this version of the firmware updates, Apple does not provide a graphical user interface or instructions for using password protection. If you have obtained third-party instructions for modifying Open Firmware for password protection, you risk damaging your computer.

Warning: Changes to Open Firmware that have not been explicitly endorsed by Apple may damage your computer's logic board. Any repairs that are necessary because of this damage would not be covered under the terms of the Apple One-Year Limited Warranty, AppleCare Protection Plan, or other AppleCare agreement.

The firmware updates that include the password protection framework are:
    • iMac FirmWare Update 4.1.7
    • G4 FW Update 4.1.8
    • PowerBook FirmWare Update 4.1.8
    • iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7
    • G4 Cube FWUpdate 4.1.8
