System 7 and System 7.1 run on all Macintosh Plus and later Macintosh models up to the Power Macintosh, that have 2MB RAM and a hard drive -- though some features are not available on all models.
The minimum RAM requirement for System 7 and 7.1 is 2MB. However, Apple is encouraging customers to use at least 4MB for running multiple applications and to accommodate many of the popular Macintosh applications that individually require 1MB or more of RAM to run.
In addition, if you have a 68030 microprocessor or a 68020 microprocessor with a Paged Memory Management Unit (PMMU) installed, you can use the Virtual Memory feature.
Printing
System 7 and System 7.1 are compatible with all printers that work under previous versions of the Macintosh operating system. Networked Macintosh computers running System 7 or System 7.1 can share laser printers with Macintosh computers running System 6.0.X, running the proper LaserWriter driver.
* With System 7, use LaserWriter Driver 7.0 or later. (Note: Apple recommends that System 7.0 & 7.0.1 users install System 7 Tune-Up, which will install LaserWriter Driver 7.1.1.)
* With System 7.1, use LaserWriter Driver 7.1.2 or later.
Notes
:
* LaserWriter Driver 7.0 and 7.1.2 are completely compatible with System 6.0.X.
* LaserWriter Driver 8.0 is compatible with System 6.0.7 and higher.
* It is not possible, however, to run a System 7 LaserWriter driver and earlier LaserWriter drivers on the same Macintosh.
* It is possible to have both LaserWriter Driver 7.x and LaserWriter 8.0 on the same Macintosh, as they do not conflict with each other.
