    You upgrade to System 7.x and complete the installation successfully. But when you restart, you find that all your icons (including system extensions, Control Panels, and applications) look generic. Disk First Aid says no repair is necessary. Everything seems to be there, and the Macintosh boots with no problems. Rebuilding the desktop does nothing. What's going on?

    This problem seems to occur with v7.5 system software when you install from the new v2.0 CD. This is also a problem with any newly produced Power Macintosh systems with v7.5 software installed on the Apple hard drive. You get generic icons after a desktop rebuild.

    The reason the generic icons appear is because the bundle bits on the Apple v2.0 CD are set incorrectly. When you install from this CD, the installed system file has its bundle bit turned off (it should be on) and the system enabler has its bundle bit turned on (it should be off).


    Workaround
    ==========
    If you cannot download the System 7.5 Update 1.0 at this time, but still want to fix the problem temporarily, you can try rebuilding the desktop after starting with extensions off. To do this:

    Step 1
    ------
    Restart your Macintosh while holding down the shift key.

    Step 2
    ------
    Continue holding the shift key until you see the "Welcome to Macintosh, Extensions off" Screen.

    Step 3
    ------
    Let go of the shift key and hold down the option and command keys simultaneously.

    Step 4
    ------
    Click "Okay" when the message "Are sure you want to rebuild the desktop file..." appears.

    If rebuilding the desktop with the hard drive as the startup disk does not work, try rebuilding the desktop while booting from Disk Tools or System CD.

    If you still have generic icons and you have a disk editor like Norton, MacTools, or ResEdit, simply turn the bundle bits on (system) and off (enabler), as described above, and rebuild your desktop file. You will be able to have the system enabler installed and get properly displayed icons.


    Solution

    Install the System 7.5 Update 1.0 to correct the issue.

    On older versions of System 7, the problem is most likely that there was enough room on the hard disk to successfully install the system software, but not enough room to build the desktop correctly.

    The solution is to move or delete some files to make more room on the hard disk and rebuild the desktop. You will find that all of your icons are restored.
