TOPIC

This article describes the Macintosh LC III control chips.

DISCUSSION

    SONORA
    ------
This ASIC performs timing video generation, sound, peripheral decodes,
interrupt, DRAM, VRAM, and miscellaneous glue logic functions. Sonora
integrates the functions of many separate chips from the LC II into one
package, which helps lower cost and improve reliability.

    EGRET
    -----
A single chip microcontroller (Motorola 68HC05EG) that performs keyboard
scanning, real time clock, ADB interface, and parameter RAM storage. The
Macintosh LC III can be reset via the keyboard by holding down the Control
and Command keys then hitting the power key. An interrupt is generated by
holding just the Command key and pressing the power key.

    COMBO
    -----
The SCSI and serial interfaces are handled by the 85C80 Combo chip as in
    previous Macintosh models.
