In the AppleCD 300 User's Guide, both mode and speed are mentioned. I was
under the impression that normal speed was mode 1 and double speed was mode 2.

Can you please explain the difference between mode and speed?

DISCUSSION

In respect to CDs, modes refer to the format of the various fields written on
the compact disk (such as sync, header, data, ECC, etc.). The different modes
are not a function of different drive speeds, and can be used at both single
    and double speed.

The AppleCD 300i and the external AppleCD 300 will play the following types of
    compact disks:

    CD-Audio
    CD-ROM (modes 1 and mode 2)
    CD-ROM XA (mode 2, form 1 and form 2)
    CD-I (mode 1 and mode 2)
    CD-I Ready
    CD-I Bridge
Photo CD (single and multiple sessions)
