TOPIC

    We've been downloading shareware and we keep getting a screen that says that the application program can't be found. This also happens with some stuff that came on the hard drive, like clip art files.

    Also, I think I need HyperCard 2.0 for one of my programs. Is this loaded on the Performa 405 or is it shareware or a commercial program?

DISCUSSION

    The message "The application program that created it could not be found" will come up in two instances.

    The first is when you try to open a document when you do not have the application that created it on your hard drive. Most likely the shareware programs you are downloading are compressed to save space and download time. They require the program that compressed them in order to uncompress them. Some common compression programs and the extensions they add to the end of the name of the documents they create are:

    Program = Extension Name

    Compactor = .cmp
    StuffIt = .sit
    PackIt = .pit
    Disk Doubler = .dd

    (There are others as well.)

    Example: A file named Game.sit is compressed by StuffIt and you will need a copy of StuffIt to uncompress it.

    These uncompressing programs will usually be on the same downloading service where you got the file. If you cannot find them, ask the sysop of the board.

    When you double-click on clip art files you also get this message, because the graphic program that created these files did not come with your Performa. But you can still use these files. You have a program called ClickArt ClipOut under the Apple menu and it allows you to use these files. Just hit the Open button at the bottom of the tool palette of the ClickArt ClipOut window.

    There is another way to use these files. Most programs come with the ability to translate or at least open the files created in other programs. For example, your Performa 405 probably came with ClarisWorks or WordPerfect Works. These applications are capable of reading graphic documents even though they did not create these documents. You do this by opening the document from within the program. Consult the manuals for these programs, or call the vendors for more specific instructions on how to open foreign file formats.

    The other time you might get the "application not found" message is when your computer loses track of where the application is located on your computer, though this is rare. You can fix this problem by rebuilding the desktop file. This file keeps track of what applications open what type of documents and the icons that go with these files. Refer to your manual on page 220 for information on rebuilding the desktop.

    HyperCard 2.0 is not included with your Performa computer. But you do have HyperCard Player. This version of HyperCard allows you to play stacks, or open them up and view them. If you wish to make stacks or edit them, you need to purchase HyperCard 2.0 from Claris Corporation. This is a commercial program.
