This article describes the power on/off characteristics of the Apple MessagePad series or eMate 300 computers.
DISCUSSION An important design goal of the Newton project (encompassed by the Apple MessagePad and eMate 300 computers) was to provide an immediate ready state at all times. This feature allows the user to "power off" the device in an open application (for example Notes) and later "power on" the device and quickly be returned to the last used state. This "instant on" capability is achieved by building a sophisticated sleep state into the design of the Newton device. For most users, this sleep state is seen as "off" but in reality, the Newton device is only "off" when all power is removed or the reset button is depressed. The latter only powers off the unit for a moment and then returns the unit to "on." This resetting or powering off the Newton device will result in all "static" information being reset and the unit returning to the last saved state. During the next power on cycle, the Newton device will chime and proceed to load information stored in memory into RAM. This process is noted by the message "activating packages." The Newton device may then issue a message telling the user that the device restarted because all power was removed. This sequence of events only occurs when the unit is powered on after being off (reset or power removed), or in some cases, a software fault has caused the unit to restart. Here is how to power on your Apple MessagePad for the first time: 1) Insert a fresh set of batteries in your Apple MessagePad. 2) Remove the battery cover and press the reset switch with the tip of your stylus. This resets your Apple MessagePad. 3) Slide the power switch down and let it spring back. The power switch is located on the left side of the Apple MessagePad. 4) Take the Newton's pen and tap the Xs that are displayed on the screen. This will align your Apple MessagePad's screen. After you have powered on your Apple MessagePad for the first time, you can sleep and wake the MessagePad by sliding the power switch down and letting it spring back.
