I keep getting the message "Sorry, an error of type 15 occurred" when my
PowerBook 170 hard disk spins up while I'm on battery power.

DISCUSSION

A Type 15 System Error is a segment loader error. The segment loader is a
portion of the operating system that loads pieces of a program into memory.
These pieces contain program instructions. Programs on the Macintosh can be
split into many small pieces (with a usual maximum size of 32,768 bytes) so
that not all the program is required to be in memory at once. The segment
loader is used to load a piece of a program when it is needed. If it can't
load that piece, then the program can no longer run, and a System Error 15 is
    reported.

Try reinstalling your system software from the disks that came with your
computer, or a backup copy if you have one.
