TOPIC

I bought the largest memory card available for my Macintosh PowerBook (Duo) computer, but my machine does not seem to be recognizing or accessing it. I tried it in my friend's PowerBook Duo computer and it worked fine. Does this mean there is a faulty card slot on my computer's logic board?

DISCUSSION

All Macintosh PowerBook Duo computers have memory controllers on their logic boards designed to understand up to a certain maximum amount of RAM. Therefore, the amount of memory that your Duo can read depends on which model you have. The Maximum amount of RAM and the largest card that it can accept is shown in the following table.

Macintosh PowerBook (Duo) Model   Maximum Amount of RAM  Largest Memory Module
    -------------------------------   ---------------------  ---------------------
    PowerBook 210, 230, and 250              24 MB                  20 MB
    PowerBook 270c                           32 MB                  28 MB
    PowerBook 280 and 280c                   40 MB                  36 MB
    PowerBook 2300c*                         56 MB                  48 MB

*Note: All of the models have 4 mb on the motherboard except the 2300c which has 8 mb on the motherboard.

One other possible reason that your RAM card works in your friend's PowerBook computer but not yours is probably due to the range of RAM tolerance specifications allowable for Apple Macintosh computers. Because the tolerance is defined within a range it can vary from unit to unit. The third-party companies that manufacture memory cards for Apple's Macintosh computers may design them at the very limits (high or low) of the PowerBook computer's tolerance. Apple makes no guarantee that third-party products will work with Apple products.

To test whether or not your machine falls within the Apple-specified tolerance parameters you (or an authorized Apple Service technician) should see how it performs with the Apple 4 MB or 8 MB card. If that functions properly in your computer, there is nothing wrong with your PowerBook computer, but the RAM card may not have been manufactured within the computer's tolerances. If this is the case, you will need to contact the manufacturer of the card for more information.
