TOPIC This article provides an overview of options for networking Macintosh and PC computers. Adding a Macintosh computer to a PC network, and adding a PC to a Macintosh network are discussed.
DISCUSSION
When designing your network, identify the services you want to utilize. Sharing printers or sharing files on the network may require additional software or specific protocols including AppleTalk, TCP/IP (LPR), IPX (by Novell), or printer sharing. Some printers can work with multiple protocols including TCP/IP through LPR, AppleTalk, a direct serial or parallel connection. So, separate network protocols may coexist. Refer to article 20148: " LaserWriter Printers: TCP/IP Solutions Guide " for more information on printing using TCP/IP. Software can be added to a Macintosh computer to provide access to PC-compatible computers running NetBEUI/NetBIOS or added to a PC-compatible computer to provide access to a Macintosh computer running AppleTalk. Below are some possible solutions to provide connectivity between Macintosh and PC-compatible computers.
