TOPIC

This article provides an overview of options for networking Macintosh and PC computers. Adding a Macintosh computer to a PC network, and adding a PC to a Macintosh network are discussed.

DISCUSSION

When designing your network, identify the services you want to utilize. Sharing printers or sharing files on the network may require additional software or specific protocols including AppleTalk, TCP/IP (LPR), IPX (by Novell), or printer sharing. Some printers can work with multiple protocols including TCP/IP through LPR, AppleTalk, a direct serial or parallel connection. So, separate network protocols may coexist.

Refer to article 20148: " LaserWriter Printers: TCP/IP Solutions Guide " for more information on printing using TCP/IP. Software can be added to a Macintosh computer to provide access to PC-compatible computers running NetBEUI/NetBIOS or added to a PC-compatible computer to provide access to a Macintosh computer running AppleTalk. Below are some possible solutions to provide connectivity between Macintosh and PC-compatible computers.

Connecting PC-Compatible Computers to AppleTalk Networks

    • AppleShare Client for Windows by Apple Computer, Inc. - Runs on Windows 3.1x. Lets PC-compatible computers connect to LocalTalk, Ethernet, or Token Ring networks. Provides client for accessing AppleTalk file and printer services.
    • PC MacLAN and Personal MacLAN Connect by Miramar Systems - Runs on Windows 3.1x and Windows 95. Lets PC-compatible computers connect to LocalTalk, Ethernet, or Token Ring networks. Provides full peer-to-peer file and printer sharing between Macintosh and Windows PCs.
    • COPSTalk for Windows by COPS, Inc. - Runs on Windows 3.x and Windows 95. Lets PC-compatible computers connect to LocalTalk or Ethernet networks. Provides client for accessing AppleTalk file and printer services. COPS also offers a LocalTalk card for PC-compatible computers.
    • To share a parallel or serial printer connected to a PC-compatible computer, you should set up printer sharing in Windows 95. Refer to article: 30028: " LaserWriter 12/640 PS: Network LaserWriter Sharing " for more information to share printers using Windows 95.

Connecting Macintosh Computers to a PC-Compatible Network

    • NetPresenz - To copy files using TCP/IP without connecting to a drive, you can use NetPresenz shareware, which is available from many sources. You also need to turn on Windows 95's built-in FTP services on the PC-compatible computer.
    • DAVE - DAVE from Thursby provide access to NetBEUI/NetBIOS on Macintosh computers. See article 21115: " Macintosh On Microsoft NetBEUI/NetBIOS Networks " for more information on DAVE.
    • Timbuktu Pro - Netopia's Timbuktu Pro ( http://www.netopia.com/ ) offers cross-platform file sharing services, as well as the ability to control a computer remotely.
