I sometimes see network cabling referred to as "plenum" cable. What does this mean?
DISCUSSION Plenum is the area between the ceiling and the floor above it. This is a common location for network cabling. Some federal, state and local fire codes restrict the type of cabling (for data and other uses) than can be installed in this area. Plenum cable is usually teflon-coated. In the event of a fire, it is designed to burn without giving off toxic fumes. Fire code restrictions typically require non-plenum cable to be installed in a protective conduit. |
