    This article provides the specifications for Apple Remote Access Client version 3.0.


DISCUSSION

    Modem support and scripts

    • Modem scripts for a range of Hayes-compatible modems and ISDN terminal adapters
    • Additional scripts may be available. Contact your modem manufacturer for more details
    • If you understand the Apple Remote Access connection control languages scripts (CCLs) and are an experienced programmer, you may be able to write the necessary modem script yourself. This process can be expedited using the Apple Modem Script Generator** (available on the Apple Remote Access Client CD).
    Dialing and connection management
    • Built-in DialAssist technology automatically generates dialing sequences for mobile users
    • Control strip module makes it easy to select a configuration, and connect, or disconnect from the server
    • Manual or automatic dialing
    • Redial or alternate number option

    • Ignore dial tone option that supports nonstandard telephone equipment

    Error detection/data compression
    Several built-in components help reduce errors and optimize delivery of data, including:
    • Smart buffering (developed by Apple Computer, Inc.) for data-transfer optimization
    • MNP4, an industry standard for error detection
    • V.42bis, an industry standard for data compression
    Security
    • Supports Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) for PPP connection
    • Supports the Apple Remote Access security API for ARAP connections, compatible with Apple Remote Access 2.x security plug-ins
    • Allows interaction with the Remote Access Server through a terminal window and chat scripts for compatibility with systems using other security mechanisms
    Specifications
    • User name maximum length: 255 characters for PPP, 31 characters for ARAP
    • Password maximum length: 255 characters for PPP, 8 characters for ARAP
    Supportability
    • Option to connect automatically to PPP server when an application that uses TCP/IP is launched
    • Log file keeps track of session information to assist in troubleshooting
    System requirements
    • A Mac OS based computer with at least 8MB of RAM
    • Mac OS version 7.1, 7.1.1, 7.1.2, 7.5.3, or later (version 7.5.3 or later required for PowerPC processor based systems)
    • Open Transport version 1.1.1 or later
    • A Hayes-compatible modem (14.4 kbps or faster recommended)
    • Modem cable with hardware handshaking
    • Apple Remote Access Personal Server or MultiPort Server (or any Apple Remote Access-compatible server)
    • PPP-compatible or Apple Remote Access 2.x- compatible server, such as the Apple Remote Access Personal Server version 3.0
