I have a PowerBook 3400 and an external monitor. My PowerBook is supposed to support this monitor but the display remains black. Is there anything I can do?
DISCUSSION The behavior you describe can occur with PowerBook 2400 and 3400 systems. The 2400-3400 Graphics Update may resolve the situation. The software consists of an extension and a Control Strip Module. Drop them onto your closed System Folder and restart. When you Control-click on the Monitor Resolution control strip module you will see a list of resolutions. Select the correct one for your monitor. It will force the PowerBook to that resolution and the display will switch to the external monitor. If you make a selection and there is no monitor attached, the screen will go black. To recover, press the power key. This will bring back the built-in display and show the shutdown dialog box. Select Cancel and you can continue working on the PowerBook. Another way to reactivate the display is to close the PowerBook lid (the sleep light will NOT come on), then open the PowerBook and press the Space bar; the display will reactivate.
