TOPIC

Sometimes when I put my PowerBook to sleep and swap batteries, it shuts down and will not power back on until I plug it in to an AC outlet. Why is this?

DISCUSSION

In the time between removing the first battery and inserting the second battery, the PowerBook is using the backup lithium battery to power the RAM. If you have a large RAM card that draws an excessive amount of power, the RAM card can drain the backup battery before the second main battery is inserted. This can also happen with a smaller RAM card that is faulty.

In each case, the PowerBook may shut down and be unable to start up until it is connected to AC power.

If you encounter this behavior, first try removing the RAM card to see if that eliminates the problem. Instructions for removing the RAM card can be found in the user's guide. If you find that removing the RAM card solves the problem, contact the RAM vendor to find out if you can get a replacement RAM card that won't cause the same behavior.
