ReadMe File for AdobePS 4.2 for Windows 95
This document contains insxxxtallation information and software release notes for version 4.2 of the Adobe PostScript Printer Driver (AdobePS 4.2) for use with the Windows 95 operating system. AdobePS 4.2 provides several features not found in the standard Windows 95 PostScript driver, such as Watermark printing and greater support for many popular applications.
The following topics are covered in this ReadMe file:
Driver Folder
This folder contains all of the files needed to load, configure, and operate AdobePS 4.2 including its online help files and this ReadMe file.
PPD Folder
The PPD Folder may contain one or more PostScript Printer Description (PPD) files. AdobePS uses a PPD file to determine the available features for each printer. PPD files contain information on each printer's available features (e.g., paper size, ROM-resident fonts, memory). The PPD folder contains PPD files for a large variety of Adobe PostScript printers, imagesetters and film recorders. Printer manufacturers develop and distribute PPD files for their printers and usually include the appropriate PPD file on a disk with the printer. If your printer did not come with a PPD file, contact your printer manufacturer for one. Adobe also distributes some PPD files as a courtesy to printer manufacturers. If your copy of AdobePS did not include the PPD file you need in the PPD Folder, you can also check Adobe's World Wide Web site ( http://www.adobe.com ) or BBS (206-623-6984).

A question mark pointer appears. Click any object in the dialog box with this pointer to display a short description of the object. You can also display help on an object by right-clicking that object in the dialog box.
Installation Troubleshooting
This section offers solutions to issues that you may encounter copying AdobePS 4.2 installation files to your hard disk.
For difficulties specifying a printer for your installation, refer to the troubleshooting topics in the Setup online help. For difficulties using AdobePS 4.2, refer to the troubleshooting topics in the AdobePS 4.2 online help.
Symptom : A version of the Setup program files already exists on your system.
Solution : When the Setup program detects the same, an earlier, or a later version of the Setup files than the version on the AdobePS 4.2 floppy disk or CD-ROM, the Existing Files On Local Disk dialog box appears. If an earlier version of the Setup program already exists on your system, overwrite it by clicking Next. If your version of the Setup files is the same or later than the Setup version, keep your version by clicking Skip.
Symptom : Setup cannot copy the driver files to the specified directory.
Solution : This occurs when you try to copy the Setup program to your disk or when you are copying the driver files to your disk and the destination directory is read only. Consult with your system administrator and have him or her either complete the entire installation for you, change access privileges on that directory, or choose another location for the driver files.
Symptom : Setup will not allow you to install older versions of the driver files.
Solution : When one or more of the driver software files on the AdobePS 4.2 CD-ROM or disk have earlier dates than the driver files on your local disk, the Attempt To Install An Older Version dialog box lists the driver files with later dates now on your local disk. For more information on a file, select the name of the file and click Details. Installation can be continued but the files on your local disk with later dates than the AdobePS 4.2 CD-ROM or disk will not be overwritten. If you still wish to install the driver files from the AdobePS 4.2 CD-ROM or disk, you must first delete from your local disk any driver files with later dates.
Symptom : The versions of certain system files need to be updated.
Solution : The Setup program has checked the version numbers, dates, and sizes of the system files and found that certain files need to be updated. The Different Versions Detected dialog box lists the files to be updated. To obtain more information on a file, select the name of the file and click Details. Click OK when you have finished viewing the differences. Then click Next to copy the newer files to your system.
Driver Usage Notes
Printer installation
Certain system characteristics, such as configuration, available memory, and the number of currently open files, may limit the number of printers you can install during any one session. To install more than 50 printers on your system, exit the setup utility after each set of 50 printers.
Data format setting
The AdobePS 4.2 default Data Format setting is ASCII data, which enables the file to print on any printer. You can improve performance if you configure your printer to accept binary format data transfers instead of ASCII. AdobePS 4.2 provides binary data formats appropriate for use with serial or parallel port connected printers, and for printers connected via AppleTalk® or Ethernet.
For more information, see "Specifying Data Communication Protocol and Format" in the AdobePS 4.2 online help.
Custom page settings
Some PostScript printers support user-definable page sizes, or "custom pages." Windows 95 limits the maximum custom-page length to 129 inches. If you specify a value greater than 129 inches, AdobePS 4.2 displays an error.
The Page Setup dialog box of some applications replaces the custom-paper names that you specify with their own fixed names for custom paper. The selected custom-paper settings remain valid, and the documents will print correctly.
Some applications, such as Microsoft WordPad, cannot distinguish between printers that are the same model but that you have named differently. As a result, such applications display all custom pages defined for all printers of the same model.
Type 1 font emboldening
Symptom : Some applications provide an emboldening feature for PostScript outline fonts (Type 1) that do not have a "native" bold face, such as Zapf Dingbats. The emboldening process is inexact and may produce slight typographic imperfections. These imperfections may be a concern only for very high-resolution devices, such as imagesetters, or if you require precise typographic fidelity.
Solution : Choose a Type 1 font family that has a native bold face.
Printing TrueType fonts
Symptom : Certain characters in some TrueType fonts may not print correctly. This is due to imperfections in the fonts themselves.
Solution : To eliminate TrueType character imperfections, choose another font.
Windows 95 interface issues
Some Printer properties dialog boxes are part of the Windows 95 operating system and are shared with AdobePS 4.2. These property sheets, such as Sharing and Details, may contain spelling or accelerator-key inconsistencies. Adobe anticipates that the next version of the Windows 95 operating system will correct these issues.
WPX Files in \WINDOWS directory
Whenever AdobePS 4.2 installs a printer, it creates a WPX file in the \\WINDOWS directory. A WPX file is a condensed description of the printer's features. If you later delete an installed printer, the associated WPX file is not removed. Unused WPX files create no issue with the system other than the disk space they consume. The typical WPX file occupies approximately 12K bytes of disk space.
Specifying available printer memory
AdobePS 4.2 enables you to specify any value for the Available Printer Memory option in the Device Options properties dialog box. Specifying a value outside the range of your printer may result in very large files, decreased printing performance, or printing failure.
Normally, the default value AdobePS 4.2 supplies is adequate for most needs. To change this value, make sure the value you set for this option falls within the available memory specifications of your printer. You can get printer memory information by printing a test page from the General properties dialog box.
Units conversion discrepancies
Setting the unprintable area and custom-page sizes in inches or millimeters generates numeric values converted to points (a point is 1/72 of an inch), which AdobePS 4.2 uses for internal calculations. In these calculations, AdobePS 4.2 rounds off the numeric value you provide to its nearest point equivalent. Because of this, you may observe small discrepancies between the specified numbers and the numbers that appear in the fields after you click OK in the Unprintable Area dialog box.
Application Software Compatibility Issues
Support of driver features
Symptom : Some applications do not support all AdobePS 4.2 features. Usually the application simply ignores the feature, but in rare cases, a printing error may occur.

Solution :
Print watermarks in the foreground.
Printer Compatibility Issues
Printer PostScript Level
Symptom :
AdobePS version 4.2 only supports Level 2 or Level 3 PostScript devices; it does not support Level 1 devices.
If you have installed a previous version of AdobePS for a Level 1 device, installing version 4.2 replaces the previous version and it no longer prints on Level 1 devices.
Solution :
Adobe recommends that you delete any Level 1 printer icons from your Printers folder and re-install them using Microsoft's Add Printer Wizard.
ICM and ICC Profiles
AdobePS 4.2 fully supports Windows 95 Image Color Matching (ICM). ICM can enhance the
output of color PostScript printers. ICM is enabled only if you have an ICC profile for your
printer installed. Adobe does not provide ICC profiles with this release of AdobePS. If you
have a color printer, you may wish to contact your printer vendor for available ICC profiles.
RGB-based ICC profiles do not now support Host Image Color Matching, although they do
support all other modes of color matching. Profiles that do not conform to Windows 95 ICM
requirements may allow you to select any of the color matching options, but will have no effect
on the output.
Certain ICM-enabled applications may override settings you have selected in AdobePS 4.2.
Switching between PostScript and Other Printing Languages
Symptom :
A printing issue may occur if you have a printer that can switch between printing languages and you have manually downloaded the PostScript header using the Send Header Now button in the PostScript properties dialog box. In this case, the header may be lost and printing may result in a PostScript error.
Solution :
For more information on language-switching capabilities, refer to your printer documentation. You may also wish to retain the default driver settings so that AdobePS 4.2 will download the PostScript header with each job.
Custom Page Settings
Symptom :
Certain printers with custom-paper support (roll-fed or cut-sheet) rotate the image 90 degrees if the custom-defined paper size width is greater than the length. This printer feature may cause unexpected printing results, especially if the Transverse feature is selected.
Solution :
For information on custom-paper features specific to your printer, see your printer documentation.
Sending Error Handler to Printer With Low Memory
Symptom :
If your printer is low in memory, the error handler may not be able to print complete messages if an error condition occurs.
Solution :
Either add more memory to your printer or disable the error handler by turning off the Print PostScript Error Information option in the PostScript properties dialog box.
