DISCUSSION

    FireWire 1.0

FireWire 1.0 is Apple's Mac OS support for the IEEE 1394 High Performance Serial Bus standard. Apple's FireWire 1.0 software is provided as a single extension called FireWire Support. This extension adds services to the Mac OS that support the use of third-party FireWire hardware and software.

    FireWire Description

The IEEE 1394 standard specifies a cross-platform digital peripheral interface suitable for multimedia devices and many other high performance applications. FireWire's benefits include fast real-time transfer, plug-and-play, hot swapping, a higher-speed growth path, and easy-to-use cables and connectors.

FireWire products currently available include digital video cameras and PCI cards that can be used to capture digital still images and to perform non-linear editing of digital video, including the creation of new digital media content. Apple's FireWire Support extension provides general-purpose functions that are not limited to digital video applications. Consumer and professional FireWire products available in the near future may include digital VCRs, printers, entertainment systems, synthesizers, DVD, set-top boxes, scanners, still cameras, disk drives, and other devices.

    Hardware and Software Requirements

FireWire 1.0 can be used with any PCI-based Mac OS computer running System Software 7.6 or later. Third party hardware and software may have additional memory, hardware, or software requirements.

FireWire 1.0 requires at least one PCI card with a FireWire interface. Third party product information can be found on Apple's FireWire Home Page at this address:

    http://www.apple.com/firewire

Information about the IEEE 1394 Trade Association, and many FireWire products, can be found at this address:

    FireWire 1.0 Installer

This installer places the FireWire Support extension in the Extensions Folder in your System Folder. Third party kits may also include this extension, so you may not need to install FireWire 1.0 separately. Carefully read all third party documentation (e.g. ReadMe files) for the latest details.

To open the FireWire 1.0 Installer, double-click the Installer icon.

IMPORTANT If you do not have a FireWire PCI card, there is no reason to use the FireWire installer.

    Known Problems and Limitations

IEEE 1394 and FireWire support up to 63 FireWire devices (including computers) connected together. Do not connect more than 63 devices at one time. Do not connect devices in such a way that any two devices have more than 16 cables directly between them.

Do not connect FireWire cables in a way that forms a ring of devices. Plugging both ends of one cable into the same device creates a loop, and is not allowed. Unused FireWire connections should be left empty. There are no terminators for FireWire connections.

If these instructions are not followed correctly, your computer and other FireWire devices may not operate correctly.
