TOPIC

This article describes a condition in which the text and graphics in the Sound section of the Monitors & Sound control panel may appear garbled, inaccurate or incomplete, and/or the controls do not respond as expected.

DISCUSSION

Should the I/O Card (also known as the Personality Card) of the Power Macintosh G3 become partially unseated from its slot or otherwise not making good contact internally, the Monitors & Sound control panel may report garbled, incomplete, or inaccurate sound options. Volume or balance sliders may not respond as expected, and other text or graphics throughout the Sound section may be missing or misaligned.

Note: It is likely that the symptoms described here will coincide with an intermittent or total loss of sound output, including the startup chime.

The following graphic illustrates one example of how the Monitors & Sound control panel may appear under this condition:

Properly reseating the I/O Card by removing it and reinserting it is often sufficient to correct the situation. Alternatively, simply pressing down firmly on the card instead of removing it first may be enough. The I/O Card is secured to the inside rear panel by two screws on the top of the I/O Card fence, and by one screw on the outside, at the bottom of the card, next to the external DB-15 monitor port. This procedure is recommended only for service technicians and experienced users. Responsibility for damage to the card or other components while attempting this procedure lies entirely with the user. If in doubt, please seek the assistance of a authorized Apple service provider. Always take proper precautions against electrostatic discharge prior to touching any internal components.

After reseating the card, a logic board reset is recommended, though not always necessary. To do so, press the small reset button next to the outermost PCI slot for approximately 2-3 seconds. Be aware that this will fully reset the Parameter RAM.
