TOPIC

I am using Network Assistant to observe or control a remote computer. Sometimes the mouse movement or screen redrawing becomes slow and choppy. What can I do to increase performance?

DISCUSSION

Here are a few things you can do to the Network Assistant client and admin station to improve observe/control performance. (Remember that performance will be affected by the amount of other traffic on the network.)

    • Choose a simple desktop pattern on the client. When you select a Desktop Pattern in the Desktop Pictures or Appearance control panel, the size of the pattern will be indicated. For best performance, select a pattern that is 16K or smaller.
    • Reduce the number of icons on the client's desktop.
    • Make sure both monitors are displaying the same number of colors. (Millions of colors are not supported on the client.)
    • Configure Network Assistant to send only QuickDraw changes:
          1. Open the Network Assistant application.
          2. Choose Preferences from the Setup menu; a Preferences window will appear.
          3. In the Preferences window, choose "Only Send changes made by QuickDraw" under the subheading "Screen Sharing".

    Version Differences
    • Network Assistant 3.5 has the option "Only Send changes made by QuickDraw" preselected as the default. You would only have to select this option if it has been altered from its default after installation.
    • Network Assistant 2.0 does not have this feature as an option.

    Notes
    • Changing the preference will increase performance. However, if there are any non-QuickDraw applications that must be used (such as applications which use Postscript or if Quicktime movies need to be viewed), this option should not be used. Instead, leave it as is or switch it to "Send all changes (requires ethernet)".
    • If you are using a non-Mac OS 8 system to control a Mac OS 8 system or you are using Adobe Type Manager (ATM) on the system being controlled, make sure that you have the same fonts on both systems.
