TOPIC
The Print Admin application in AppleShare IP 6.0 provides new security features to help network administrators manage access to printers and printer queues. When creating or editing a queue in the Print Admin program you will see a security tab. This tab will enable the administrator to provide "casual" security features to their queues. The administrator will be able to restrict access to specific users and groups, and require a password (
Note:
printer driver software that supports the password feature are not available at AppleShare IP 6.0 ship time, but should be available soon).
DISCUSSION When specifying which users have access to a queue, the user name must match the owner name for the computer. This is because the owner name is inserted into the postscript document when it is created, using the DSC command %%For. The print server will check to see if the owner name inserted into the PostScript document matches any users in the authorized user list. If these names do not match an error message such as "A PostScript error has occurred. Go to Finder for details" may appear (there may be no further details in the Finder). Check in the Server Log for that queue to see if there is Security Violation error. If so, then you need to adjust the names so that they will match. This can be done by changing the owner name to match a current user, or by changing the user name in the Users & Groups list so that it matches the owner name on the user's computer. Troubleshooting: To verify that the owner name of the client and the user name on the Server match: --Open the client's File Sharing control panel (pre OS 8 open the Sharing Setup control panel). Determine the owner name of the computer. ¥Using the ASIP Print Server Admin application, open the queue in question for editing, and verify that one of the names in the list of users approved to print to the queue matches the owner name on the client's Workstation. --If the entries do not match, change either the owner name on the workstation, or the users name on the server so that they do match. Also, some operating systems (Window NT) use PostScript drivers that do not support the %%For command as mentioned above. On these operating systems using a secure queue will not be possible, unless a driver can be found that supports the %%For DSC command. Troubleshooting: If the user is trying to use the secure feature on a non Mac OS Computer verify that they are using a compatible PostScript driver by printing a document to a file, not the printer. Then open the document in a Text Editor and look for the %%For command. |
