TOPIC

This article is about Network Assistant 3.5 passwords and how they are used.

DISCUSSION

When installing Network assistant for the first time on a client workstation, the Installer will ask you to set a password (this is the main administrative password for this workstation), and whether you want "none" (no access privileges) or "full access privileges" to this workstation. After setting the password and privileges the Installer will finish the installation. The access privileges can be customized after the installation has been completed by using the Network Assistant Security program.

Using the Network Assistant 3.5 security program you can create up to five sets of access privileges to a workstation, each set having its own password. The password the Network Assistant application uses to capture the workstation will determine the amount of access to that workstation. This means the administrator is limited to the privileges assigned to the password used when capturing a workstation.

Features of the Network Assistant administrative application can be restricted by adding a second password. This is done via the restricted access option under the setup menu. When a user opens Network Assistant with the restricted access password the application is limited to the features selected when the password was setup. The only way the access privileges can be changed is by opening the application with the main administrative password. This restricted access password is for use with the network assistant administrative program only. It is not related to the passwords assigned via the network assistant security application.

Network Assistant Security will only open with the main administrative password. Network Assistant the administrative application will open with both the restricted access password and the main administrative password.

Additional points to keep in mind:
    • When the Network Assistant screen is secured, either password (administrator or restricted access) can be entered to gain access to the program. If the restricted access password is entered all restrictions will be in place.
    • If the passwords on the client workstations are different than the ones set using the Network Assistant administrative program, the administrator will have to enter the password for the workstation he/she is trying to capture. The administrators can be provided any one of the five access passwords which dictate the type of access they have to the workstations.
    • The privileges of the password used to capture the workstation will be enforced. To change to another access level you will have to remove the workstation and recapture it with the another password.
    • If the Network Assistant program (Administrative) and the Network Assistant Security program (Client) are installed on the same machine, when the main administrative password is changed in one of the applications it will change it in the other application. This applies only for that one machine.

If a password is forgotten it can be changed by following the steps described in the Network Assistant manual on page 19.

Other places in the manual to look at for password information:
    Workstations; 16, 18-19, 22, 94-95
    Administrative Station; 26-28, 40
