TOPIC
I have a Power Macintosh G3 and an iMac computer running Mac OS 8.1. Occasionally, I share files from my computer with other people on my Ethernet network using File Sharing. Recently, I have noticed that when my computer is in sleep mode, files seem to copy more slowly across our network.
DISCUSSION When a Power Macintosh computer is in sleep mode, the computer, hard drive and display are all put to sleep by default. Under Mac OS 8.x, the Energy Saver control panel allows users to change these settings. Within the Energy Saver control panel, users may change Server Settings via the Preferences menu. One of these Server Settings allows users to "Never put the hard disk to sleep.". By selecting this option, the hard drive will not sleep or spin down when the computer goes to sleep. Selecting this option also allows files to copy faster to and from the computer because the hard drive does not have to spin up to do the file transfer. |
