TOPIC

This article discusses the two main types of freezes that may occur when using the AppleShare Client for file sharing.

DISCUSSION

The vast majority of freezes or hangs while using AppleShare Client on a Macintosh can be classified into two categories based on when they occur during the login process.

    Freezes When Mounting A Volume

A client may freeze just before an AppleShare volume would be mounted on the desktop. When using the Chooser to mount a volume, this occurs after you have selected a server, entered your password or have logged in as a guest, and have just selected the volume(s) you wish to mount and clicked OK. When using the Network Browser to mount a volume, this occurs after the list of volumes has appeared under the server and you have just double-clicked on one. This freeze is generally caused by Apple Menu Options and is detailed in the following Tech Info Library article:

Note: This issue has been addressed in Mac OS 9.

    Freezes When Copying Files

This symptom is generally caused by a third party extension or control panel.

For example, if you are running Mac OS 8.5 or later, a common cause of freezes when copying files is with certain virus protection software. If you experience such problems, try removing or disabling your virus protection software. Most anti-virus utilities have now been updated to work properly with Mac OS 8.5 and later.

See the following Tech Info Library article for more information on how to diagnose other possible issues with third party extensions:
