TOPIC

This article describes possible solutions to the error message:

"To run an Internet application via America Online, you must sign on first. To run an Internet application via an ISP/LAN, you must restore your TCP configuration by clicking the Restore button in the AOL link panel within AOL's Preferences dialog."

This message is usually seen when the computer starts up and clicking OK simply causes the error message to reappear. Force quitting (command-option-escape keys held down simultaneously) causes the computer to stop responding and the message reappears when the computer restarts.

DISCUSSION

One possible cause for this message is that Web Sharing is turned on. To check this, restart your iMac and hold the space bar; this causes the Extensions Manager window to appear during startup. When the Extensions Manager window appears, select the iMac (or Mac OS 8.5) All set. This disables the AOL extensions and allows your iMac to start up successfully. You can then verify Web Sharing is turned off (use the control strip or the Web Sharing control panel if necessary to turn off Web Sharing).

When opening Web Sharing control panels a message may appear stating, "The server has stopped because an error occurred, stopped; -30603 TCP/IP is not installed or not configured correctly." Click OK.

Once Web Sharing is turned off, you can restart your iMac, holding the space bar during startup to activate the Extensions Manager. This time, turn your AOL extensions back on. When your iMac has successfully started up, open the TCP/IP control panel and switch from Ethernet back to AOL link enhanced (or AOL link). Close the window and save the information.

Test your AOL connection. If the error persists even with Web Sharing turned off and TCP/IP set correctly, contact AOL for assistance with reconfiguring your AOL software.

Note: AOL Link is used when you dial into an AOL access phone number (that is, when AOL is your Internet Service Provider). If you connect to the Internet in other ways (traditional Internet Service Provider, LAN connect at work) then those TCP settings must be used.
