TOPIC

Can I view movies recorded on DVD-R using Apple DVD Player?

DISCUSSION

    Background

DVD-R media provides a reliable and cost effective format for data and video recording, distribution, and storage. A single-sided DVD-R disc can store up to 3.95 GB of high density data. By using DVD-R, information is permanently recorded (write-once), and cannot be altered or erased. DVD-R also provides an archival life span equivalent to CD-ROM/R, and is compatible with both DVD-ROM/DVD-RAM drives and DVD-Video players. Individuals can use DVD-R media to create DVD video discs using DVD authoring software and a DVD-R burner.

    Requirements
    • Apple DVD Player 1.2 or later is required to view DVD video recorded on DVD-R media. Apple DVD Player 1.2 is included with Mac OS 8.6.
    • DVD-R media will play in generation-3 (and later) DVD-ROM drives and any DVD-RAM drive.

All Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) and PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze keyboard) DVD configurations come with a generation-3 DVD-ROM drive. Earlier models have a generation-2 drive, which cannot read DVD-R.

Note: In compliance with the MPAA, DVD-R discs with CSS-encrypted video data cannot be read.
