I was using my computer and I noticed the smell of smoke. What could have caused this?

DISCUSSION

On occasion components used in the manufacturing of computers fail. These components include capacitors, resistors and integrated circuits. Apple, as well as other computer manufacturers, does exhaustive testing of its designs and the components used. Even after all of this testing, components can sometimes fail.

In some instances when a component fails it produces a small amount of smoke. The smoke is usually related to a failure condition within the component that cause the component to overheat. This elevated temperature can cause the component to produce smoke.

This smoke can have a strong smell but it will not create a safety issue. Units are shielded to prevent any possibility of the elevated temperature or fire from causing damage outside of the piece of equipment.

If you feel that a piece of equipment that you are using has had a component failure that has resulted in smoke being emitted, do the following:

      1. Unplug the equipment and do not plug it back in or operate the equipment.
      2. Contact either Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to arrange to have the equipment examined or repaired.
