TOPIC

When I log in to a Panels environment, the icons for all of the applications appear as a large pink letter "M". This is not the correct icon for any of the my applications, and I cannot get the correct icons back.

DISCUSSION

This is an issue when you have custom icons for fonts on a computer running Mac OS 8.1. AppleWorks is one program that installs fonts with the custom icons described above. Fonts from other applications may have their own, different icons.

You can work around this by clearing the custom icon from the font. You must move the font out of the Font folder to do so:

      1. Move the font out of the Font Folder to the desktop.
      2. Select the font and choose Get Info from the File menu.
      3. Select the icon in the Get Info window.
      4. Choose Clear from the Edit menu. The custom icon should disappear and the font should appear as a suitcase.
      5. Move the font back to the Fonts folder.

Follow this procedure for all fonts with custom icons.
