TOPIC

When importing an Edit Decision List (EDL) and using the resulting sequence to perform a batch capture in Final Cut Pro, if the clip names used by the imported EDL are too long you may get "duplicate file name" errors.

DISCUSSION

Final Cut Pro allows file names of 31 characters in length. (File names are limited by the Mac OS, and are different from clip names, which exist only within a Final Cut Pro project file and may be up to 128 characters in length.) When importing an EDL, clip names of this length are acceptable. Batch capture, however, uses these names for the file names of the resulting captured clips, and for special reasons looks only at the first 27 characters of these names. Any clips with the same first 27 characters in their name that are batch captured will trigger duplicate file name errors.

To prevent this, rename any offending clips to differentiate them from inadvertent duplicates.
