TOPIC

Some Macintosh computers with Mac OS 9.0.2 or 9.0.3 may stop responding when certain Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices are connected.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom
The computer may stop responding at system startup time if a USB device, like a floppy drive, is connected.

    Products affected

    • Power Mac G4 with Mac OS 9.0.2
    • iBook with Mac OS 9.0.2
    • PowerBook (FireWire) with Mac OS 9.0.2
    • iMac (Slot loading) with Mac OS 9.0.3

    Solution
Install Mac OS 9 Update (9.0.4) using the Software Update control panel. You can also download it from Apple Software Updates at http://www.apple.com/swupdates/ .

You can also work around this issue by waiting until the computer has started up before plugging in any USB devices. They should then work normally.
