TOPIC

If KidSafe is installed and active on your computer, you cannot log on to a file server through AppleTalk; you must log on through TCP/IP.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

Attempting to log on to a file server through AppleTalk from a KidSafe-enabled Macintosh generates an error, warning that the server is not responding properly.

    Products Affected

    • iTools KidSafe
    • Mac OS 9

    Solution

You must log on to a file server by connecting through TCP/IP. KidSafe requires the Multiple Users feature of Mac OS 9, so be sure the account you are using has access to the Chooser or the Network Browser. Follow one of these procedures to log on through TCP/IP:

    Using the Chooser

      1. Open the Chooser.

      2. Click the AppleShare icon to select it.

      3. Click Server IP Address.

      4. Enter the IP address or host name of the file server.

      5. Click Connect.

    Using the Network Browser

      1. Open the Network Browser.

      2. Choose Connect To Server from the Shortcuts menu.

      3. Enter the IP address of the file server.

      4. Click Connect.

Tip: After logging on to the file server, make an alias of it for subsequent use.
