TOPIC This article outlines several considerations related to printing from an iTools KidSafe-enabled computer, including AppleTalk zones, desktop printing, and USB printer sharing.
DISCUSSION If your computer uses iTools KidSafe, there are several considerations related to printing. Printers Within the Local AppleTalk Zone There are no special considerations when printing within your local AppleTalk zone. Remember, though, that KidSafe requires the use of the Multiple Users feature of Mac OS, so be sure the user has access to the printer(s) and the Chooser. Printers Outside the Local AppleTalk Zone Follow this procedure to set up a printer outside your local AppleTalk zone: 1. Log in as the owner. 2. Disable KidSafe. 3. Log out. 4. Log in as the user for whom you are setting up the printer. 5. Open the Chooser, select the printer, and set it up as you normally would. 6. Log out. 7. Log in as the owner. 8. Enable KidSafe. 9. Log out. Desktop Printing A printer that does not utilize desktop printing cannot be used as a printer with a KidSafe-enabled Macintosh. Ask the printer manufacturer for an updated printer driver that works with desktop printing. USB Printer Sharing You cannot print to a printer that is available on the network through USB Printer Sharing if KidSafe is enabled on your computer.
