TOPIC

Certain iMac computers whose hard drive has been upgraded may start up with a gray or white screen and then stop responding. Partitioning the hard disk resolves the issue.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

One of these two symptoms occurs:

    • When the computer starts up, the iMac displays a gray screen. The desktop never appears.
    • When the computer starts up, the iMac displays a white screen, with text that includes the phrase, "Apple iMac Open Firmware".

    Products affected

Certain iMac computers that originally had a hard drive smaller than 8 GB and have subsequently been upgraded with a hard drive larger than 8 GB. The list includes:
      • iMac 233 MHz
      • iMac 266 MHz
      • iMac 333 MHz

    Solution
      1. Back up all data.
      2. Use the Drive Setup application program to partition the drive; make the first partition smaller than 8 GB.
