TOPIC

The default settings for an iTools Email account do not implement the Bounce To Sender feature found in the Mac OS X 10.0 Mail application. Change the application's account settings to use another SMTP server to enable this feature.

DISCUSSION

    Symptom

When you try to use the Bounce to Sender feature of the Mac OS X 10.0 application Mail, an alert box appears with this message:

"Mail System Error. The email address you used could not be authenticated."

    Products affected
    • Mac OS X 10.0 application Mail
    • iTools Email

    Solution

You may be able to use the Bounce To Sender feature by using your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) SMTP server instead of the Apple iTools Email SMTP server. The SMTP server must meet these two requirements:
    • Must allow mail relaying.
    • Does not require SMTP server authentication.

If your ISP's SMTP server does not meet these requirements, you may continue to use your Mac.com account; all features other than Bounce To Sender remain available.

Follow these steps to change the SMTP server that the Mail application uses:
      1. Open Mail.
      2. Choose Preferences from the Mail menu; the Mail Preferences window opens.
      3. Click the Accounts icon within the Mail Preferences window.
      4. Select your Mac.com email account from the list of accounts.
      5. Click Edit; a dialog box appears with account information.
      6. In the SMTP Host field, enter the name of your ISP's SMTP server. (The Mac.com SMTP server is named smtp.mac.com)
      7. Turn off authentication by deselecting the "Use authentication when sending mail" checkbox.
      8. Click OK to close the dialog box.
      9. Close the Mail Preferences window.
