TOPIC Power Macintosh G3 Ethernet (Built-In) driver Version: 2.0.1 was released on December 4, 1997 . This software requires US Mac OS 8.0 and one of the following: Power Macintosh G3 Desktop 233, Power Macintosh G3 Desktop 266, Power Macintosh G3 Minitower 233, Power Macintosh G3 Minitower 266. Note that this software is not needed for the PowerBook G3. DISCUSSION
Description This driver is used by the Power Macintosh G3 built-in Ethernet interface. When using the 2.0 driver, data corruption could occur when utilizing the built-in Ethernet interface where the system was connected to an Ethernet network with a significant traffic load. In addition, when connected to an auto-sensing 10/100 Mb Ethernet hub or switch, the Power Macintosh G3 Desktop and Minitower computer may fail to attach to the network. The 2.0.1 driver fixes these two problems. Note that this software is not needed for the PowerBook G3. For complete information, please see the Read Me included with this software. The driver is used by the Power Macintosh G3 built-in Ethernet interface. The 2.0.1 driver fixes two problems present in the 2.0 driver. Data Corruption Using the 2.0 driver there is a possibility that data corruption could occur when utilizing the built-in Ethernet interface. Data corruption could occur only in situations where the system was connected to an Ethernet network with a significant traffic load. Auto-sensing 10/100 Mb Ethernet Devices When attached to an auto-sensing 10/100 Mb Ethernet hub or switch, the Power Macintosh G3 computer fails to attach to the network. When attempting to switch to Ethernet, a dialog will be displayed: "An error occurred while trying to start up your AppleTalk connection. The built-in LocalTalk port will be used instead." A typical 10/100 Mb auto-sensing device polls the interface to determine the link speed. While the device is attempting to learn the link speed, the Ethernet driver is performing a self diagnostic. Unfortunately the Ethernet driver completes the self diagnostic before the hub has determined the link speed and therefore determines that the network is down. Identification The Ethernet driver is located in the "Extensions" folder which is located inside the "System Folder". To determine if you have the 2.0 version of the driver, do the following: 1. Double click on the "System Folder" icon to open the folder. 2. Double click on the "Extensions" icon to open the folder. 3. Locate the file "Ethernet (Built-In)". 4. Click once on the file to select it. 5. Select "Get Info" from the "File" menu to view the version information. If you have version 2.0 you will need to upgrade the driver. Please use the following instructions to upgrade the driver. Installation To install the 2.0.1 Ethernet driver, do the following: 1. Drag the new driver "Ethernet (Built-in)" on to your "System Folder" icon. This will install the new driver into the "Extensions" folder replacing the old driver. 2. Reboot. 3. Verify the new driver is installed by following the steps under "Identification". The new driver will display as version 2.0.1. Note: The lastest Ethernet driver is v2.0.2, which is included with OS 8.1 and also fixes the problems that 2.0.1 resolved? This article can help you locate the software update mentioned here: |
