    What Is the iMac CD Firmware Update?

    Apple is aware of certain iMacs experiencing noise from the vibration of certain CDs when inserted in the internal CD-ROM drive. This vibration is typically caused by unbalanced CDs when spinning at higher speeds in the internal CD-ROM drive. This vibration may cause the drive to have difficulty reading the CD. The iMac CD Firmware Update application places new firmware on the CD-ROM Drive to reduce the amount of disc vibration.


    Who Needs to Install the iMac CD Firmware Update?

    iMac customers should only use this update if they are experiencing loud vibrations from the internal CD-ROM Drive when using certain CD titles. If this behavior is not occuring, then this update is not needed. This application is not required for any other systems or CD-ROM drives.


    Installing the iMac CD Firmware Update

    To install the iMac CD Firmware Update, follow these steps.

    1. Save all open documents and close all applications before running the iMac CD Update.

    2. If a CD-ROM disc is mounted in the drive, unmount the volume and eject the disc.

    3. Double click on the application iMac CD Firmware Update.

    4. Click "Continue" in the dialog box that appears.

    5. If the application is unable to update your settings, a dialog box will appear. If the drive is unable to
    be updated and you have a vibration problem, please contact your local authorized Apple dealer.

    IMPORTANT: It is very important not to reset the computer, or remove power from the system while this application is running. Doing so could cause damage to the CD-ROM drive.
