DISCUSSION PlainTalk Version Systems Supported System Software Required -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 660AV/840AV 7.1.x 1.2.1 Power Macintosh 7.1.2 1.3 660AV/840AV & Power Macintosh 7.5.x Important Information About Your PlainTalk Software: You MUST be using the PlainTalk microphone or an equivalent microphone that is PlainTalk compliant. Microphones bundled with previous Macintosh models will not work properly with Power Macintosh Systems. If you have a non-AV Power Macintosh and you are not using an AudioVision display, you will need to purchase a PlainTalk microphone from an Apple Authorized Dealer (part number M9060Z/A). About the PlainTalk software: PlainTalk 1.2.1 software is designed to work only on Power Macintosh computers running System Software 7.1.2. About the Apple Extras folder: The Apple Extras folder contains files needed for speech recognition to work. Don't delete items from this folder unless you are sure you don't need them, and make sure that you keep backup copies of any files you delete. If you see a message that there isn't enough memory available: If you see a message that the SR Monitor is having trouble due to lack of memory, save all your open documents and quit the applications you have open. To avoid running out of memory while using speech: Ž Quit the applications you have open. Ž Use the Speech Setup control panel to choose a voice that takes up less memory, or turn off voice feedback. (The voices named ñAgnes,î ñBruce,î and ñVictoriaî take up the most memory.) Ž Use the Memory control panel to turn on virtual memory. (With virtual memory on, voices may be slightly distorted and, with some applications, speech performance may decrease.) Ž Add more memory to your computer. About the Sound control panel: Speech works best with your systemÍs default sound settings. If you encounter problems with speech, make sure that the options in your Sound control panel are set to the default: Set the rate (Sound Out section) to 22.050 kHz and turn off Playthrough (under Options in the Sound In section). If you write scripts: The Speech Macro Editor enables you to create and edit scripts that will run as the result of a spoken command. If such scripts contain loop commands, such as AppleScriptÍs Repeat statement, make sure that the loop has an exit. If you inadvertently specify a loop statement that has no exit (an infinite loop), the commands within that statement will repeat indefinitely. To regain control of your Macintosh, you will need to restart the computer. |
