TOPIC

When I try moving text in a Names slip when the Corrector slip is showing, I get an error (-48406). I use a MessagePad 130 with OS 2.0. What is going on?

DISCUSSION

Apple has found that the Newton OS 2.0 produces an error (-48406) when you try to move a word with the Corrector slip showing. The following steps will result in the error:
      1. Activate Names and make a new entry (person or company).
      2. Write something in one of the fields and double-tap it.
      3. Tap the Corrector button in the popup menu (the button on the right side of the keyboard button).
      4. Move the selected word to another field (the Corrector slip with the stalls for each character is open)

The selected word gets copied (rather than moved) and an error (-48406) occurs.

Dragging a selection that is open in the Corrector results in several incorrect behaviors.
    • The selection is copied rather than moved. This can be worked around by erasing the original selection after dragging.
    • The actual dragging pen movement is translated by the Corrector or handwriting recognition. If the drag occurs over the space occupied by the Corrector, the drag is translated by the Corrector into a letter, usually an "L" or a "-" depending on the direction of the drag.
    • The Newton OS returns a -48406 error. The -48406 error means "Expected an integer". In this case, the error message is not meaningful.

Apple has been able to reproduce this problem with the US Newton OS 2.0 and the German OS 2.0 version (only with the Names application).

The best workaround is to close the Corrector before dragging words.

This problem was corrected in Newton OS 2.1 (eMate 300 and MessagePad 2000) systems.
